Sappington Cemetery Retaining Wall Replacement

Work has officially begun on the long-awaited retaining wall at Sappington Cemetery, a project that has faced multiple delays but is now moving forward. The construction will replace the deteriorating railroad tie wall with a new, modern concrete block structure, ensuring the long-term stability and preservation of this historic site.

This project was first identified in 2021, with initial plans calling for construction in 2022. However, the city soon discovered that not all portions of the existing retaining wall were on city-owned cemetery property, which led to a legal issue that took until 2024 to resolve. Once the property concerns were settled, the project was bid and awarded in late 2024.

Even after the legal matters were cleared, another obstacle remained - a very old Ameren utility pole sitting directly in the construction zone. The removal of that pole was necessary before work could begin, and after much coordination, it was finally taken down in early February 2025.

With these challenges now behind us, we are thrilled to see real progress. The old, crumbling railroad tie wall has been removed, and new concrete block is going up in its place. This long-overdue improvement will enhance the cemetery’s appearance and structural integrity, preserving its historical significance for years to come.

Not the biggest news story in Crestwood, but just another example of perseverance and progress!!
