One of the highlights of the Crestwood Proposition A ballot measure will be the replacement of the playground at Crestwood Park. As the city’s largest and busiest play space, this playground has provided countless hours of enjoyment for the last 20 years, but it is showing its age.
The goal for this update is not to just replace equipment but to create a welcoming, inclusive space designed to meet the needs of all children in the community. The new playground will be accessible, ADA-compliant, and equipped to be "A Place for Everyone."
Gathering Resident Input
The design process for this project began immediately following the passage of Prop-A, with the Parks and Recreation Department working closely with the community to gather input. This process included multiple open house events, where residents could share ideas, vote on different design concepts, and offer feedback. Thirteen designs from seven vendors were presented to residents in August, and the community helped narrow these down to the top three.
To involve the playground’s most frequent users, students at Long Elementary School also participated in the selection process, voting on their favorite of the final three designs. Each student received an “I Voted” sticker, making their involvement both impactful and memorable.
Refining the Design for Accessibility and Fun
With the community's and students' selection in hand, the Parks and Recreation Department refined the winning concept, incorporating features to make the playground enjoyable and accessible for children of all abilities. The updated design exceeds ADA standards, providing a meaningful and inclusive play experience. This final design was approved by the Board of Aldermen in October, clearing the way for construction.
Looking Forward to the New Playground Opening
Construction on the new playground is scheduled to begin this winter, with completion anticipated by spring 2025. Once finished, the city plans to celebrate the opening with a ribbon-cutting event, inviting Long Elementary students to participate in the festivities.
This project reflects Crestwood’s commitment to community involvement and to creating inclusive spaces that serve everyone. Residents can look forward to watching this playground transform into a vibrant gathering place for Crestwood families, creating great memories for children and parents alike.
